12月5日午前、ユキが展示用獣舎で出産をしました。
来園者が一頭目の出産を目撃し飼育員に報告。
メスとオスの双子の赤ちゃんが誕生したということです。

子グマの父親はホクト（10歳・ロシア生まれ）
母親はユキ（11歳・旧ユーゴスラビア生まれ）
2頭は2002年から繁殖に取り組んでいましたが、今回が初めての子グマです。
ホクトとユキはミドリグマで話題にもなりました。
10時10分頃メス（体長25cm・体重570g）が最初に生まれ、11時50分頃、オス（体長28cm・体重780g）が生まれたということです。
かつて北海道の円山動物園では、ツヨシとピリカの性別間違い問題があったため、イコロとキロルの性別判定については慎重に進められたと記憶しています。
今回の件では出産直後に性別が発表されたというのがなんだか不思議な気もします。
飼育班長さんによると、11月初旬に妊娠の兆候を確認し産室も用意していたものの、様子を見ていたら展示中に出産してしまった、ということらしいです。
野生では妊娠中の母グマは冬ごもりしますし、動物園での出産の場合もできるだけ静かな環境を整えてあげるのが一般的なのかなと思っていましたが、通常通り展示していたらいつの間にか出産していた、というのはかなり珍しいケースではないでしょうか。

ホッキョクグマの赤ちゃん死ぬ 姫路市立動物園で２頭
7日午前11時25分頃、獣舎内で子グマが亡くなっているのを飼育員が確認しました。
解剖の結果、双子の胃の中には母乳を飲んだ形跡がなく、衰弱死とみられています。
姫路市立動物園は当初人工飼育も検討しましたが、ユキが子グマに関心を示したため、まかせることにしたようです。
このあたりは見極めが難しいですね。
当初は3月頃に一般公開の予定でした。
亡くなってしまったことは悲しいですが、長らく出産まで至らなかったペアでも、今後可能性があるというのは大きな希望になったように思います。
ホクトとユキのこれからも楽しみですし、例えば上野動物園のユキオさんとレイコさんももしかしたらまだ…とか。
ちょっと関係ないですけど、周南市徳山動物園のペアも「ホクトとユキ」なんですね。
どちらも日本のしろくまとしてはかなり多い名前なんですけど、なんとも頭が混乱します。
鹿児島市平川動物公園は「ホクトとカナ」です。間違えないようにしないと…。
